Gamer Gal Tree Talks Women and Gaming

masked tree Gamer Gal Tree Talks Women and Gaming

Meet St. Petersburg Fl. native Theresa Keith aka “Tree” who is a female gamer. Along with telling us about the annoyance that is the Backseat Gamer, she also talked a bit about women in gaming, a subject that comes up quite a bit within our very misunderstood gaming culture:

BM333: Well to start off about how long have you played video games and what do you like about them?
Tree:
Since I was like 4. Well… life can be annoying sometimes so games sort of make things fun. I also think that it’s a social thing too because you can play games with other people. Usually I’m drawn to the stories because it’s like interacting with a book.

BM333: You mentioned the social aspect and I know that there are games like WOW, Halo, etc. what is it about the social aspect that you like?
Tree:
It’s probably the fact that I am uncomfortable at times with being social.  Video games are a way of having something in common with people.

BM333: So you’d say that it’s a good outlet to socially connect with people in a sense?
Tree:
“Definitely. It seems to be one of the things that will get me to talk to people if I don’t know what to talk about. It’s sorta why I don’t have too many female friends because it’s like they say “ohhhh video games (in a condescending tone).” Then they go into talking about something like shoes and I’m like meh yeah shoes……lol.

BM333: So the consensus seems to be that females are not as into games as males, why do you think that is?
Tree:
Yeah that’s what it seems like sometimes. I don’t know why. Maybe I’m just not meeting these females that are really into them. Maybe we just suck at them! (jokingly). They can be all like I suck at them so it’s dumb. I’m not implying that they are ALL bad at them though.

BM333: Well I will have you know that this past Evo Tournament (Super Street Fighter IV event) there was a female category of the tournament. And it seemed to have a decent turnout. It’s good to see a lot of active female gamers out there in the gaming community such as yourself, who take games seriously.
Tree:
I don’t why females are not into games. It’s hard to say why because I started to like them when I saw my mother playing Final Fantasy.

Editor’s note: Thanks for being a good sport and chatting with us Tree.

Hmmmmmm…As a girl gamer myself I have to disagree with the girl and games stereotype. All of my girlfriends with the exception of one play games. Not every girl likes shoes, there are sporty girls, nerdy girls, anime girls, etc. Tree should go to cons, she’d meet a lot of similar minded females. As far as the tournament goes, if I understood correctly they had a separate part for female gamers? Fighting Games aren’t football, why would you have to separate male and female gamers? Weird.

Didn’t realize I was commenting on a two year old interview…

It doesn’t make your comment any less valid than if it were released yesterday. You have made some good points on gamer stereotypes that continue to be popular even today – despite what we see in our everyday lives. My girlfriend plays a lot of games but would not be considered a “gamer gal” by any means. Games are a mainstream media form of entertainment now, not the hobby of the few, the proud like it used to be 10+ years ago.
