First Improve Upon The Questions That You Ask…
What Class/Race Should I Pick? Many times while playing MMO’s I see this very question in General Chat. My question to those of you who ask this is, why do you want to be a “flavor of the month”? Do you know what happens to flavor of the month classes? They get nerfed into holy hell and become classes that take effort to win with. So why not pick a class that you actually like and are willing to learn and then ask the next question…
What build or spec should I choose for my class? Depending on what game you play and the amount of balance it has placed in its trees, the people who play the class will normally vie for the build they choose and you can try it out yourself. If it will be a permanent choice (some games will not allow you to respect) then do some research on the game’s forums. Read on people’s complaints, what they find fun, and what the general consensus is with each individual tree. Analyze which will be the one that you can work at and then choose it and train with it.
Keybinds are your friend!
For newer MMO’s you need to go into the options, select “keybinds” and place things where you can get to them without thinking, taking your hand off your mouse, or even worse… having to look at your keyboard. Players opt for the Q, E, R and F keys to put their popular commands typically. Change A and D from turning into strafe, and set the numbers 5 – 0 to skills that aren’t used much in PvP. If you have to look down to find it, you are already dead!
RTFM – The instructions are there for a reason
When you start working your way up a character’s skill tree, you ought to read what the skill does and factor in how it can help you win a fight. Many players just don’t read period and it is insane how many times they ask stuff that is right there when you hover over the skill with your mouse. Don’t expect everything to be an easy mash of buttons, use what works and read what it actually does!
Stop whining in chat and get back in the war soldier!
Seriously, if you have time to type complaints during a skirmish then you are a terrible PvPer. The guys who aren’t typing are rebinding, rezzing, and running back into the frey to get their kills. It is one thing to be competitive but it’s another to be a poor sport who spazzes out at his teammates for sucking. Think about it… they are trying and you are typing… good PvPers are the ones who PvP, if you want to “chat” the Role-Play option is that-a-way.
You’re only as good as your tools
Don’t expect to win if you’re still wearing the base gear from the time you reached level 80. The best PvPers are decked out in the best that the game has to offer. For this some MMO’s force you to join a raid guild, others allow you to earn them through many hours of PvP. Until you have the coin, the time, or the luck to get the top gear, you should be wearing the best that money can buy so that if anything you are at least competitive.
Employ an actual strategy and learn to dance
PvP can happen so fast that you are left with your head spinning and your corpse freshly raped from an attacking horde. Many bad PvPers negate strategy in lieu of spamming buttons. It’s just like anything else, you must PvP a lot and you MUST learn from every encounter. If you know that a class has a trinket that makes them invincible for 5 seconds when they are about to die, then save your speed boost for that time so you can kite their asses for the 5 seconds. This way you make the trinket wear off and you can then rush in for the coup de grace… only a crazy person would keep fighting an invincible opponent when the same class has killed them over and over within that same 5 seconds. Adapt and overcome!
You will die… so get over it
PvP is like every other learned skill in life, you will fail often before you figure it out and begin to win. See my former paragraph on typing out your frustrations? That’s what scrubs do; the gods of PvP aren’t typing, they are winning. So die, resurrect, and get better, trust me – with enough deaths and experience with combat you will be logging victories in no time.
