Personally, I consider Skyrim to be a beautiful escape into a real Fantasy world. Sure other RPG’s will allow you to wear the shoes of a hero going on a grand adventure but none of them feel as “table-top” as Skyrim does. I think this element is the key to its draw (gamers like myself are drinking the Kool-aid hardcore) along with the beautiful real-time scenery, the impressive dialogue and the lack of loading in the massive world a la Grand... 

Proving Grounds of The Mad Overlord I recall two boys in a living room cheering and arguing over who delivered the killing blow to the dreaded wizard Werdna, since one boy played and the other’s character decapitated the villain. We would swap turns traversing the dank halls of the dungeon below Gilgamesh’s Tavern, fighting Frost Giants and dropping the Nuclear powered “Tiltowait” on Greater Demons. Capcom used to make some of the most kickass beat-em ups in the arcade. What I mean by beat-em up is that you have a side-scrolling landscape, a collective of heroes and three buttons for punch, kick and jump – the rest is up to you and three other gamers to hash out. While games like Cadillacs and Dinosaurs and Dungeons and Dragons – Tower of Doom gave you cool moves and combos, Shadow over Mystara did you one better and gave you immersion.... 

Bioware has done it again, keeping in tune with their reputation as great storytellers and game makers. Dragon Age Origins easily stole hours away from my life from initial purchase till finishing credits.
